Veggie garden – one month later

If you remember, about one month ago we started our own vegetable garden in our back-yard. We’ve been working hard to tend to it each night for the last month. Making sure it gets water each evening, taking out the odd bits of grass that have pushed their way to the top and making sure they don’t get trampled on by the animals or eaten by snails.

And the result of a month of tender-loving-care? Well feast your eyes on the photos below.

The eggplant (aubergine) plants have had an extra growth-spurt, almost overnight. The corn is growing nicely and it husks have started growing so it won’t be long before we’ll have some corn on the cob. We’ve already had some of the lettuce leaves in a home-made salad. The pepper and tomato plants have started flowering so we should have some fruit from them soon – there’s already a little tomato on one of the plants. The watermelon plants we’re steering into the open area (as they’re creepers) but no fruit on them just yet.

Unfortunately, Max (our golden retriever) did get in one day and trampled two of our green pepper plants, but I’ve managed to get them to grow again (albeit a little slower than the others right now). We also transplanted the herbs (peppermint and parsley) into smaller pots and put them on the windowsill in the kitchen, next to the basil and they’re growing better now.

Hopefully in another month (maybe longer) I’ll have another follow-up blog post for you with more news and pictures :-)

After too long without greenery, this year I have a container garden. I rescued an old metal grid shelf from a load of e-waste, and now have herbs and veggies in pots all over it. Also back to my old “random gardening” method – throw out peelings and leftover salad things into the garden and see what comes up. Right now it’s baby tomatoes, regular tomatoes, green peppers, a potato plant and a watermelon! All stuff I eat, I know what the originals look like, and will eat them again.. :-)

It’s amazing to see how quickly things grow, isn’t it – and eating that fresh stuff from right outside your door is one of life’s true pleasures.

That’s so cool that one can simply toss vegetable and fruit peelings and innards into a garden and they can simply grow almost on their own. What’s amazed me is the speed at which they’re growing – really looking forward to eating some of the fruits of our labour :)

Gorgeous! The corn is coming along nicely.

The herbs look awesome. You mentioned Peppermint in the pot. Where’s the Greek Spearmint? Can’t ever have enough Spearmint growing. Plant it in the ground so it can take over your yard .. yes it will. :-) Where’s the Greek Oregano?

Nice job resuscitating Max’s damage. :-) Your garden is lovely! Can’t wait for more updates.

Thanks Sweetie. You know what, it might very well be spearmint and not peppermint – I can’t tell the difference (blush). Yes, we still want to plant good old oregano as well as some cucumbers (couldn’t find seeds last time).

great stuff man, soon you’ll be growing your own pumpkins, gems, radishes, and beans too, and shortly after that, we’ll see you on the side of the N2 selling them!
From there, you’re practically already planting chickens (I think the corn has something to do with that)
Be sure to invite us all round for dinner next month, ya hear?

Hahaha – planting chickens, I knew there was a reason for planting corn – gotta remember that one. I’m going to have to use up the whole garden if we have to plant all those creepers (like beans and pumpkins). If I can make more money selling vegetables on the side of the N2 than I currently make I’ll let you know :)
